The Sky, Chicago, 1998-2022 1998
Iris print mounted to Plexiglas
38" x 33". Ed. 5 + 2 APs.
In this project, the sky is represented over time as a repeating sequence of small squares from light blue to black to blue again, spanning day and night and spanning the seasons. This Op Art calendar begins on Jan. 1, 1998 in the upper left-hand corner and ends 25 years later with Jan. 13, 2022 in the lower right-hand corner.
This arrangement is based on an accurate digital simulation of the passing years from the perspective of Chicago. Part of the optical effect results from the fact that daylight hours are significantly shorter in winter than summer in Chicago, creating the alternating stripe pattern. The left side of the frame is calibrated with a mix of significant cultural and personal dates occurring in the future, including the artist's 50th birthday and the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination.
